The Bill Ends After 27 Years

ITV is to finish up long running police drama The Bill this autumn after 27 years and a steady decline in viewers.

Up until recently The Bill was a glorified soap but was redesigned last year for a later time slot and fewer episodes. From what I saw the results were impressive with more time spent on the shows appearance and an all round higher quality show. Sadly the experiment failed as viewing figures didn’t rise and so Sun Hill police station will be closing its doors.

In the 9pm slots left vacant ITV will produce more of its short drama series which are on the whole not very good. ITV is quickly becoming a channel ruled by reality TV and magazine shows. Coronation Street is one of the few long running shows to remain after Heartbeat was also axed a few years ago, let’s not even talk about Emmerdale.

I look forward to lots of The Bill actors suddenly popping up on Eastenders and Casualty even more frequently than they do already.

Is Carey Mulligan a Fair Lady?

This all happened yesterday but I was a bit distracted. In an interview with the BBC Emma Thompson revealed that Carey Mulligan is set to play the lead role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.

While this is yet to be officially confirmed the adaptation was written my Thompson herself so she is likely to know the truth. The role was previously being fought over by both Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson, both of whom appear to have been beaten by the fresh new face. This is a sure sign of Mulligan’s new star power coming off her role in An Education in which Emma Thompson also appeared.

Fun though the Nanny McPhee films are for kids it’s nice to see Thompson returning to more adult films, the likes of which have won her awards in the past. More Mulligan isn’t a bad thing either, but can she sing?

Carey Mulligan is also rumoured to be in contention for the title role in the English language remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Out Now – But Technically Out 31st March 2010

What’s that? I forgot some of the films coming out today? Technically this pair come out next Wednesday but have previews this weekend. Odd when even the posters say the 26th. Anyway…

Kick Ass
With previews Friday, Saturday and Sunday there is plenty of opportunity to see this joy of a film before its “release”. I really loved it and you get to see that trailer on the big screen.

How To Train Your Dragon
A viking tries to hunt dragons and ends up owning one. Looks like good fun and it’s from the second best computer animation studio. Probably have more secretly dirty jokes than Nanny McPhee.

Out Now – 25th March 2010

It’s Friday. Films come out on Fridays. This Friday is no exception. Read on.

The Blind Side
Oscar winning performance from Sandra Bullock as a right wing woman who adopts a black boy and encourages him to become a professional athlete. A movie about American football and achieveing the American dream. Should go down a charm.

Nanny McPhee & The Big Bang
Emma Thompson is generally wonderful and this is no exception if you are a child or host This Morning. Probably well made, entertaining and charming family film. No roller derby though.

Perrier’s Bounty
A crime thriller comedy set in Dublin with Brendan Gleeson, Cillian Murphy and Jim Broadbent. Could be good, will definitely be Irish.

Shank
Set in the near future when British gangs leave everyone living in fear. Mostly being sold on the fact that “Effy from Skins” is in it though they don’t think any of her scenes are good enough for the trailer. If you want to see lots of people younger than you fight, swear and kiss you’re in luck!

Scott Pilgrim Trailer!

Thanks possibly to the leaked news that the trailer would debut with Kick Ass this weekend the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has been released online on apple.com and is embedded below.

All I can say is I need more! The trailer gives a good taste of the mix of romance and crazy action with gaming/comic twists. Even the wigs don’t look to wiggy.

Now for a lie down.
