Out Now – 16th April 2010

It seems like there’s a lot of films out today though only two are on wide release and neither of those look particularly appealing.

The Ghost
The title made more sense when it was called The Ghostwriter as that is what the film is about. In theory this is a thriller with lots of twists and turns with rave reviews but it almost feels like everyone is trying really hard to ignore the fact that Roman Polanski is yet to sit trial for sex crimes. I think this will be disappointing, Olivia Williams won’t be though.

Repo Men
It’s the future and there are swish replacement organs that the repo men will reclaim if you miss a payment. One repoman falls behind on his own payments and goes rogue much like Anthony Head’s character in Repo! The Genetic Opera but with much less singing. Don’t expect this film to make much sense or be very enjoyable.

Bananas!*
(on limited release)
I’ll let wikipedia do the talking here; “Bananas!* is a 2009 Swedish documentary directed by Fredrik Gertten about a conflict between the Dole Food Company and banana plantation workers in Nicaragua over alleged cases of sterility caused by the pesticide DBCP.” Sound fun? No?

Boogie Woogie (on limited release)
I’m pretty sure this is being released today though I’ve no idea where. It’s a British comedy set in London amongst the international art world. Lots of familiar faces and some racy scenes. The film was supposed to be released years ago so bear that in mind.

The Heavy (on limited release)
Vinnie Jones tries acting once again. The plot has something to do with two brothers and possibly the elections. I got bored just trying to find out about the film.

Crying With Laughter (on limited release)
Another film on which details are scarce but I can say that this is a dark British comedy and is actually in my local cinema. Could even be good!

Whatever Happened to Cameron Crowe?

Cameron Crowe used to be a powerful name. The man made Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky as well as writing Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Hell he even won an Oscar but since the poorly recieved Elizabethtown he has all but disappeared. Curiousity getting the better of me I set out, via google, to find out what he is doing now.

To be fair Crowe has taken four year breaks between releases twice before but it has been five years since Elizabethtown failed to impress the critics. While his most recent work was far from great Crowe has an impressive and varied back catalogue that has a significant presence in pop culture and maybe even film history so it seems odd that he should be banished from the industry for a single dud, though Vanilla Sky did also received mixed reviews.

Back in 2008 it was announced that Crowe was to write and direct Deep Tiki starring Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon but the filming was set to start in January 2009 and has yet to begin, I doubt it ever will. Instead it seems he has returned to his first passion, music.

It was revealed just last week that Crowe has spent the last three and a half years working on a biopic about Motown singer Marvin Gaye, struggling to find the right budget and a star to take the lead role. During my investigating I also read that Crowe has been working for years with Pearl Jam on a retrospective movie for their 20th anniversary .

It appears that while Cameron Crowe has nothing shooting right now or anything ready to release he has been keeping busy on two different projects that combine his love for film and for music. I hope that either one manages to rise out of development hell.

This is the man that first introduced us to Zooey Deschanel, he deserves a second chance.

Out Now – 14th April 2010

There are films out today! Hurray for films!

Dear John
Hey it’s Amanda Seyfried in a romantic drama with Channing Tatum who is never quite who I think he is. As this is based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, just like A Walk to Remember and The Notebook expect it all to get sad and weepy towards the end. Take tissues.

Cemetery Junction
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have gone and made their first film together, hopefully with Merchant’s involvement bringing this film far above Gervais’ recent film offerings. For a change Gervais isn’t the lead as we instead get to watch the antics of young people in the 1970s. Obviously I want to see it for the wonderful Felicity Jones but I have heard good things besides.

As Friday seems to offer more quantity than quality with its releases I’d stick with today’s flicks.

Paper Man – Trailer

Out of nowhere comes a trailer for a film I’ve never heard of but instantly want to see. The film is Paper Heart starring Jeff Daniels as a writer with an imaginary friend, Ryan Reynolds, who befriends a teenager played by Emma Stone. Lisa Kudrow is also knocking about and as anyone who has seen The Comeback knows she can do way more than Pheobe Buffay.

The cast excites me and the film looks like intriguing indie fun.

The bad news is that while Paper Man has an American release this month it isn’t scheduled to come out in the UK yet. Hopefully like Whip It and Brothers Bloom it will eventually find its way over here.
