They don’t play by the rules but they get the job done! 70’s TV show about the Met Police’s Flying Squad is remade for the modern day, starring hard East End man, Ray Winstone, and equally East End urban type, Ben Drew (a.k.a. Plan B). Sweeney = Sweeney Todd = Flying Squad – it’s Cockney, see?
Twenty8K (limited release)
Keeping it gritty in the East End, a teenage boy (Sebastian Nanena) is arrested for a gang shooting, forcing his sister (Parminder Nagra) to return home and try and prove her brother’s innocence. Think back ten years to Bend It Like Beckham (yes, ten years!) and consider the performances of the two lead actors. Who’d have thought back then it’d be Keira Knightley swanning around in highly stylised classic novel adaptations, while Parminder Nagra is consigned to a limited release of a depressing sounding thriller from the maker of Skins? Come on Parminder, you’re so much better than this.
