If you have seen Inception the clips I have embedded below are about to blow your mind as you discover just where that beautifully dramatic score came from. This is not to say Hans Zimmer skimped on his job of composing but that he did so with a beautiful little easter egg. The discovery was initially made in this video, but I had to check for myself.

Listen to the clips then click inside for a little bit of me stating the obvious and maybe throwing a spoiler about. if the clips aren’t working you might have to leave Google Reader and visit the actual site.

First of all the score to Inception.

Hans Zimmer

Now Non Je Ne Regrette Rien by Edith Piaf slowed down to 32%.

Edith Piaf

And the two together.

Zimmer Piaf Mix

Now how about Hans Zimmer sped up leading into Edith Piaf?

Zimmer to Piaf

Pretty awesome, huh?

As we know time in the dream world moves slower than in the world you are asleep in. We also know this very song was used in the film to let the dreamers know when the kick comes. So if they are hearing the song in slow motion then that would mean they are dreaming, Now I can’t be sure but if this score plays when our characters are in the “real” world that that truly opens up the possibility of the “it was all a dream” theory.

Wowza.

If it was only used when the characters were in a dream then it’s not a big twist but another layer of detail to a beautifully detailed film.

I wish I’d just posted the video, those clips took forever to get right.

The Emmy nominations were released last week and I’ve spent the weekend, or at least some of last night, trawling through to see which ones excite me and skimming past the various editing awards. Here are my personal highlights from the nominations:

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama

Breaking Bad Bryan Cranston as Walter White

Dexter Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan

Mad Men Jon Hamm as Don Draper

All three of these men have lead brilliantly written shows, and each has had to show their character developing, whether than be getting stronger or in most cases slowly unravelling. Good stuff.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie

The Prisoner Ian McKellen as Two

Ian McKellan was brilliant in a miniseries that most of the time made less sense than Lost.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

Nurse Jackie Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton

Parks And Recreation Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope

United States Of Tara Toni Collette as Tara Gregson

All three of these shows could do with some love and hinge on the performances of their leading ladies. Toni Collette probably deserves to win for seamlessly playing so many different characters through the multiple personalities.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

How I Met Your Mother Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson

Modern Family Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell

Modern Family Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker

Modern Family Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy

Modern Family deserve to win all the awards it can frankly and poor Neil Patrick Harris is trying very hard over at How I Met Your Mother.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

Breaking Bad Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman

Lost Michael Emerson as Ben Linus

Because most make you feel incredibly sorry for bad people. WIthout Aaron Paul Breaking Bad would have lost it’s heart, yo.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

Glee Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester

Modern Family Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy

Modern Family Sofia Vergara as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett

Saturday Night Live Kristen Wiig as Various Characters

Again Modern Family deserves praise. Wiig and Lynch are the only consistently funny main cast emembers of their “comedy” shows.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

Burn Notice Sharon Gless as Madeline Westen

Mad Men Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris

Mad Men Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson

Gless is the best thing about Burn Notice besides Bruce Campbell.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series

30 Rock Jon Hamm as Dr. Drew Baird

30 Rock Will Arnett as Devin Banks

Because 30 Rock does guest stars better than anyone.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series

Dexter John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell

Lithgow was amazing and got a truly deserved Golden Globe. The is no reason he shouldn’t win again. He. Was. Amazing.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series

Big Love Mary Kay Place as Adaleen Grant

Big Love may have gone crazy but it was still great, as Mary Kay Place has always been.

Outstanding Comedy Series

Modern Family

End of discussion.

Outstanding Drama Series

Breaking Bad

Dexter

Lost

Mad Men

Lost ended in a stunning way but the other three offered much stronger seasons. So hard to choose.

Comedy Series

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

There was no better place for World Cup coverage this year, and never will be for any type of news.

Outstanding Children’s Program

Wizards Of Waverly Place

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. This is no Hannah Montana.

Outstanding Nonfiction Special

Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story

Watch it any way you can. No man is more inspirational. I reckon you’d cry.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

Modern Family • Pilot

The Office • Niagara

30 Rock • Anna Howard Shaw Day

30 Rock • Lee Marvin Vs. Derek Jeter

I’m letting 30 Rock into the competition here as it really is amazing, though I’d like other shows to win occasionally.

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

Lost • The End

Mad Men • Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency

Mad Men • Shut The Door. Have A Seat.

The finale of Lost was brilliant. Every episode of Mad Men was too.

A bad trailer this week for a parody, and I use the term loosely, of Twilight called Vampires Suck. The film follows in the fashion of the later Scary Movies and their offspring in looking unfunny and lacking any wit. Waht happened to the Airplanes and Top Secrets of satire?

Watch the trailer below then come inside as I show you precisely why this film will be bad as I strive to create “original content”.

And now let’s get our teeth stuck in… (ahahahaha)

Briefly relevant pop-culture references crowbarred in -

Exhibit A: Jersey Shore

Exhibit B: Lady Gaga

Exhibit C: Alice in Wonderland

Flavour of the moment comedy stars -

Exhibit D: Ken Jeong (sadly not thanks to Community)

Over emphasised jokes -

Exhibit E: Jacob not just taking off his shirt a lot but holding up a contract saying that he has to.

Plain confusing bits -

Exhibit F: Why are there random people in random sunbeds?

Potentially funny bit -

Exhibit G: Twihards fighting, ripe for humour

From this I have made the huge assumption that most of the jokes will be weak and heavy handed and a lot will rely on mentions of current celebrities. I’d almost rather watch Twilight.

Ever since Doctor Who was rebooted with Eccleston earnestly dashing about I have listened to people marvel at The Doctor and his antics while I simply didn’t get it. I found it all poorly done, the acting was often a bit off, more for one particular assistant, the lighting far too bright and the aliens far too fake to ever be truly scary. That all changed this year as Stephen Moffat took the reins and made Doctor Who the show I had always been told it was.

In this series Moffat has made an engaging, intricately plotted and at times cinematic show. The Doctor is wonderfully played by Matt Smith as a slightly tactless kind-hearted genius accompanied by a strong, exciting and not to mention beautiful Amy Pond who has risen above companion status thanks to Karen Gillan.

Doctor Who has been better from every angle this year and the two part finale proved all that with laughs, scares and more wonderful Pond based pouting. I’m no longer ashamed to say I watch and waiting for the next series isn’t going to be easy. In just one short series Doctor Who has made it from being a show I occasionally watch to a show I spend my week looking forward to… or would do if it were on before Christmas.

Gush, gush, gush.

Ignoring for a moment Memento, The Dark Knight and Inception, (and the rather unflattering photo just above) Christopher Nolan is still a wonderful man. Why? Because he’s “not a huge fan of 3D.”

I will now let Nolan explain as i copy directly from the LA Times: “The truth is, I think it’s a misnomer to call it 3-D versus 2-D. The whole point of cinematic imagery is it’s three-dimensional. … You know, 95% of our depth cues come from occlusion, resolution, color and so forth, so the idea of calling a 2-D movie a ’2-D movie’ is a little misleading.”

Nolan goes on to explain that 3D films are less bright and that 2D films are by no means “flat”. I agree wholeheartedly and can’t think of any of my favourite films that I find lack depth in any of their frames. And as far as Nolan’s work goes Inception looks to have plenty of amazing imagery that looks amazing in 2D even on my laptop screen.

The two part finale looks all kinds of epic so expect me back here in two weeks having a bit of a gush or, if things go badly, a rant.

Remember the oscars? Remember what won best animated short film? No? Well it was Logorama which is now online in a wholly legal way for us all to enjoy.

I really enjoyed the short which involves a short tale told in a world made up entirely of logos. The story itself is best described as a crime drama/disaster movie but it’s the ingenuity involved in designing the world that really impresses. Everything is a logo! Madness. There’s nothing more to say really than watch it now.

I’ve said before that I don’t like 3D in a lot of circumstances, horror films being a major exception. When I heard yesterday that The Ring 3 would be in 3D I got a little bit excited.

3D is all about breaking down the barrier between the viewer and the film that the silver screen puts up, it should make you feel like what is happening onscreen could actually physically affect you. With a big 3D action sequence the camera angle changes so much and the 3D is so minimal it’s clear you’re not in the same reality as the film.

When a scene is framed perfectly, as in Disney World’s Honey I Shrunk the Audience, the 3D is all that more convincing. I think I’ve gone off topic…. The Ring is most famous for having a demon child, Samara, crawl out of the TV to kill her victims, what better use for 3D is there? If Samara were to appear to be crawling out of the cinema screen towards me I think I’d have a minor heart attack.

Brilliant!
