Hitchcock at the London 2012 Festival

rescue the hitchcock 9

Today the London 2012 people announced the programme for the cultural festival that will be accompanying all of the Olympics palavar.

Setting aside our concerns about how on earth anyone will be able to move in London come next summer, we’re excited to see that the film highlights include three of Alfred Hitchcock’s silent films, which will play as one-off events and accompanied by live performances of newly commissioned scores. Although less Rob da Bank, more full orchestra.

These screenings are the result of the BFI’s Rescue the Hitchcock 9 project, which is committed to restoring the master filmmaker’s surviving silent films. If you want to give them a hand, you can donate here.

The BFI London Film Festival is coming

The BFI London Film Festival starts in a month and my list of what I want to see expands every time I look at the programme: Martha Marcy May Marlene, We Need to Talk About Kevin and Chicken With Plums are the ones grabbing my attention first, while Tales of the Night might actually be an exception to my no-3D stance.

Mild Concern will, of course, be there and we’ll be going into much more detail soon but in the meanwhile, whet your appetite with the launch video.

Harry Potter is Taking Visitors

One of the many tidbits to come out of Empire’s BIG SCREEN event was the announcement of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. Opening in Spring 2012 this three-hour tour of the Harry Potter studios will be based at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

So far we are promised a look at costumes, animatronics, props and sets. The animatronics in the Creature Effects workshop will include Buckbeak, Aragog, Fawkes and the Basilisk, anyone not recognising these names shouldn’t be visiting a Harry Potter behind-the-scenes tour. As for the sets, visitors will be able to walk into the Great Hall, Dumbledore’s office, the Gryffindor common room and Hagrid’s hut.

Finally we get to visit Hogwarts without travelling across the Atlantic.

This news will strike excitement in the hearts of fans of the Potter films, and complete indifference in everyone else. Obviously I relish the idea of walking round the sets of Harry Potter taking more photos than I will ever find the time to look at. Either way tickets go on sale on October 13th 2011 at http://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/, try not to forget.

Panic in the Streets of London

With three nights of violent riots and looting it is clear that there is no justification for the chaos. After tensions boiled over in Tottenham other regions followed suit, including Croyden, Hackney and Clapham. The rioters were seemingly in pursuit of material gain and recreational destruction rather than making any particular stand.

Last night the Sony DADC Warehouse joined the list of victims and emergency services are still tackling the blaze. Far from attacking the major corporations, this was a blow for many independent labels across film and music. The warehouse served as a distribution hub for PIAS Group servicing indie music labels such as Domino and Sunday Best, along with independent studios like Guerilla Films and Peccadillo Pictures. People are already pulling together to support those facing loss.

With thousands of units of stock lost to the fire it will be hard for these smaller outfits to recover their businesses. The CEO of Guerilla Films even said, “I have spoken to friends who say they may have to lay off people, because the DVDs keep the business going.” The real victims of the riots are individuals, something those rioting may need to step back and realise.

This blog, based in London and very closely connected to Hackney, finds it all heartbreaking, seeing a great city bringing itself to its knees. Thankfully plenty of residents are rallying together to clean up London’s streets, in a very literal way. With any luck this will all end soon and we can travel home without fear.

Not even a James Cameron joke feels appropriate today.

Film 4 Summer Screen at Somerset House

Tonight marks the start of one of the biggest entries in the London-based-outdoor-cinema calendar as Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset house begins with the premiere of The Skin I Live In. You can read our review of the opening film here and I have no idea how well this disturbing piece of cinema will play to a large crowd on a summer’s evening. Maybe it’s less creepy when not watched in a basement screening room.

You can read the full line-up of films at the Summer Screen in our earlier post, but unfortunately it’s all sold out. Your only remaining chance is the enter the competition on Film4.com and try to win tickets to the triple bill of Troll Hunters, Tremors and Gremlins on 6th August. Competition closes tomorrow at 5pm so don’t hesitate.
