We Bought a Zoo – Trailer and Pics

In April last year we were wondering what had happened to Cameron Crowe after his latest film Elizabethtown had a less than successful release. One month later we discovered he was planning on writing and directing We Built a Zoo and now a year and a bit later it has a new name (removing the possibility of a building montage) and we have a trailer:

To watch this video, you need the latest Flash-Player and active javascript in your browser.

Well, it certainly looks like a heart-warming family film. Nice to see a film with animals in a zoo that don’t talk, we’ll just have to guess which is the sassy one.

Now if you fancy a lingering look at Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and some animals we’ve got you covered with some stills from the film. There’s even a few pictures of Crowe himself, proof he still exists:

Out Now – 20th September 2011

In April 2010 we were wondering just what had happened to Cameron Crowe. We are still waiting on his new scripted drama, We Bought a Zoo, but in the meantime there’s this…

Pearl Jam Twenty
To celebrate twenty years of Pearl Jam, Crowe has made them a documentary. According to someone on IMDb, “It captures the essence of the band perfectly with a very good and subtle amount of humour.” I know very little of Pearl Jam so can’t really comment. Cameron Crowe certainly knows his music though, think I might just watch Almost Famous.

There He Is!

Remember last month when I was wondering where Cameron Crowe had gotten to and discovered he was planning two music based films? Well it seems he is moving forward with a film but it is neither of the two I mentioned.

Instead Crowe is set to re-write and direct We Built a Zoo, a true story of a family restoring an old zoo in the English countryside. Also the mother of the family is dying. Awesome.

This does not really appeal to me and I’m not convinced this is the career opportunity Crowe needs to regain his position as a respected filmmaker. We’ll find out in December 2011, just before the apocalypse.

Whatever Happened to Cameron Crowe?

Cameron Crowe used to be a powerful name. The man made Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky as well as writing Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Hell he even won an Oscar but since the poorly recieved Elizabethtown he has all but disappeared. Curiousity getting the better of me I set out, via google, to find out what he is doing now.

To be fair Crowe has taken four year breaks between releases twice before but it has been five years since Elizabethtown failed to impress the critics. While his most recent work was far from great Crowe has an impressive and varied back catalogue that has a significant presence in pop culture and maybe even film history so it seems odd that he should be banished from the industry for a single dud, though Vanilla Sky did also received mixed reviews.

Back in 2008 it was announced that Crowe was to write and direct Deep Tiki starring Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon but the filming was set to start in January 2009 and has yet to begin, I doubt it ever will. Instead it seems he has returned to his first passion, music.

It was revealed just last week that Crowe has spent the last three and a half years working on a biopic about Motown singer Marvin Gaye, struggling to find the right budget and a star to take the lead role. During my investigating I also read that Crowe has been working for years with Pearl Jam on a retrospective movie for their 20th anniversary .

It appears that while Cameron Crowe has nothing shooting right now or anything ready to release he has been keeping busy on two different projects that combine his love for film and for music. I hope that either one manages to rise out of development hell.

This is the man that first introduced us to Zooey Deschanel, he deserves a second chance.
